Over the course of my career, I wrote almost 100 books. There was a period when I thought it would be possible to write another 100, because there was no lack of mystery in the world. Nevertheless, I see that my sources have dried up. It’s not that I lack for inspiration: it’s that the world is lacking for anything shadowy or inexplicable. I don’t like to point the finger at the guilty party, because that can ruin the suspense, but the butler in this case is the internet and its progeny.
Before the arrival of the world computer web, adolescent boys sought out any hint of a naked breast in hard-to-find adult magazines. Boys and girls grew up fantasizing about sex and its mysteries. But today any 12 year-old has already seen more sex on the web than old Agatha has in real life. It’s never too late to learn, so I’ve dedicated myself to porn sites. I am the only person that lies about my age in reverse, pretending I’m younger to enter the site, but that’s not important right now.
The life of celebrities, formerly a theme of curiosity and speculation, has become frighteningly banal. We thought they lived in another dimension, where worldly things did not exist. Today, you can go to any website and be assaulted by headlines screaming that what’s-his-name went to the beach and bought a popsicle. And that’s right next to the news that the stock market fell again.
And what can I say about the movies? Before, we barely recognized the face of the director. We didn’t have the slightest idea how special effects were created, what actors were thinking, or the screenwriters, or the make-up artists. This “Making Of” genre invaded all those private spaces. Pretty soon we’ll see the Making Of the Making Ofs.
We’ve even lost the mysteries within our own lives. Our childhoods were vague memories, scattered around our brains. Anyone born today is going to need to take some vacation time when they get older, just to see all the photos and videos that their parents will take just during their first six months of life.
